Description
17 North Street is a house with a shop on the ground floor, featuring a core that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. The front of No. 17 pairs with the front of No. 18. The red brick front, which appears to have been added around 1900 when the road was widened, conceals the gable of the earlier timber-framed structure above a brick parapet. The rear elevation is painted and roughcast, with a stack that has a tall brick shaft and a corbelled band, along with cast iron rainwater goods at the back.
The building has a plan that consists of a front block that is one room wide and gable-ended to the street, accompanied by a narrower rear wing. This rear wing may be the remnant of a gallery-and-back-block plan, although the gallery and back block are missing; part of the gallery of No. 18 still survives. The c. 1900 brick front of Nos 17 and 18 is symmetrical and three storeys high. No. 17 features a two-bay front with plain projecting pilasters and a plain parapet. The 20th-century shop front includes plate glass windows that angle into a central doorway, which has a two-leaf half-glazed door with low panels. Both floors have four-pane horned sash windows. The rear elevation contains two four-pane sashes and two smaller windows.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain interesting features, including framing behind later wall plaster. It is known to contain a 17th-century staircase.
