Description
Cowick Barton is a stone house with an "E" plan, believed to date from around 1540 due to stained glass (now removed) that displayed the arms of Edward VI as Prince of Wales. The interior features one chimneypiece dated 1657 and another, possibly older, with a biblical subject. The exterior is plastered and includes stone mullioned windows, along with an original three-storey porch that has a Tudor arched entrance. The house has a new slate roof. It is likely that this building was originally the Barton of Cowick Priory, which was transferred to Lord Russell at the time of the Dissolution. He may have constructed the current house for his bailiff.
