Description
This is a 17th-century farmbuilding located to the northwest of Luton Barton. It is constructed from local coursed rubble with rendered cob on the west roadside elevation and gable ends, while the east elevation features weatherboard over a timber frame. The roof is hipped and made of corrugated iron. The building has a rectangular plan, with the east elevation facing the farmyard. It includes concrete lintels over a doorway and flanking windows that were part of a former stable on the right, and weatherboarded walls on the left side, which contain a loft door.
Inside, the building has a six-bay roof supported by four jointed cruck trusses. The rear rafters rest on wall plates, and the front rafters are pegged to wall posts, following a construction style typical of Devon linhays. Notably, one of the trusses is side-pegged jointed, while the other three are rice-pegged slip tenon trusses, which are less common. Unusually for a farmbuilding, one of the wall posts and a pair of floor beams that connect to it are ornately carved with scrolled, notch-stopped details on the chamfers. This farmbuilding is an interesting and early example of a combination type that includes a linhay with distinctive features.
