Description
There are two adjacent Flood headstones located approximately 4 metres south-east of the chancel of the Church of St John. This pair of headstones commemorates members of the Flood family, with one dated 1752 and the other 1772. Both are made of Hamstone and stand about 1.6 metres high. The older headstone, situated to the north, features a shaped head with an hourglass flanked by winged cherub heads and scrolls. The panel below is framed with scrolled foliage and rosettes, and the inscription is divided into two columns by a tasselled cord, with the first word in Gothic lettering and the remainder in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. This headstone commemorates Charles Flood, who died in 1752, and his wife Mary Flood, whose death date is partially illegible. The southern headstone has a segmental-arched head, with a shallow relief carving of a vase and foliage at the top. Its inscription is also in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of John Flood in 1772 and his son Matthew, whose death date is illegible.
