Description
The Church of St John in the Wilderness is a Grade II* listed building located on the south-east side of St John's Road in Withycombe Raleigh. Originally built as a parish church in the 15th century, it was largely demolished around 1748. However, the tower and part of the north aisle were preserved, and the rest of the church has been skillfully reconstructed. The west tower is made of sandstone and features a crenellated parapet, string courses, angle buttresses, and a polygonal staircase turret. The windows of the church are generally in the Perpendicular style. The interior includes a small two-bay chancel and retains a carved 15th-century capital at the west end of the nave arcade. The church is said to have been founded in the 13th century, with some Norman fragments found on a window sill.
