Description

Knappe Cross is a large house dating from 1908, constructed of red brick with stone dressings and clay tiled roofs. It is built in a restrained Elizabethan style, incorporating Art-and-Craft influences. The house follows a modified H-plan, with gabled outer wings and three-gabled centre sections on both the front and rear elevations, separated by narrow intermediate bays. The entrance front displays an asymmetrical design, especially at the East end. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed with wide leaded lights, and include several canted bays, along with a few windows with trefoil heads. Tall, grouped chimney stacks are a prominent feature.

The interior contains several handsome rooms, featuring wainscoting and decorative ornamental plasterwork to the ceilings and friezes. Original features include well-crafted panelled doors, simple but dignified stone and granite chimney pieces, and a small chapel on the first floor with a barrel vault. There are also arcaded screens to the panelled staircase, featuring twist balusters. Other original features include wardrobes and wash basins. At the end of a room is a small salon executed in 19th-century French taste.
