Description

Exe View House is a detached house dating to around 1820. Originally listed as Barn Close on 11 November 1952, it was constructed as a Regency gentleman’s 'cottage' built to take advantage of fine views of the Exe estuary. The walls are of plastered cob, with thatched hipped and gabled-end roofs. The house has a two-room, central stairhall plan and was originally heated by rear lateral stacks, with later rear extensions added. It has a symmetrical three-window front facade. The ground floor has 16-pane hornless sash windows, with a 12-pane window to the first floor centre. A central slate-roofed lattice-work porch shelters a fielded panel door with a moulded surround and a rectangular fanlight with intersecting tracery. Rear wings feature hornless sash windows, along with 20th-century casement windows and a French window to the ground floor.
