Description

The Shieling is a detached cottage dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. It is built of roughcast cob on stone footings and has a hipped thatched roof. Originally designed as a two-room plan cottage, likely with a central through passage, it is now accessed through a 19th-century extension on the right-hand side, which follows the curve of the lane. The old range is heated by end stacks, with the right-hand stack originally external and both featuring brick shafts, the right-hand one being heightened.

The cottage has two storeys and a front that features a three-window range. The first floor has three-light casement windows with lintels at eaves level, while the ground floor has three four-light casement windows. The 19th-century extension includes a casement window on each floor. Inside, there is one deeply chamfered axial ceiling beam that is unstopped, and an unchamfered bressumer that once supported a partition between the original two rooms, which has since been removed. The roof is a complete 17th-century structure, with principals that extend down to rest on uprights (one of which is visible), and it features pegged and morticed joints at the apex of the three trusses, with halved and pegged collars. All the rafters are pegged onto the ridge piece.
