Description

Haydon's Farmhouse and Ebford Manor Cottage is a farmhouse with an attached cottage, likely dating from the late 16th century, though it has undergone significant alterations and expansions. The building features roughcast cob on stone footings and a gabled-end slate roof. It was probably originally designed as a three-room, cross-passage plan house, with the higher end located to the left of the passage. The rear of the building faces south-south-west and may have been the original front. The service end was extended, possibly in the 17th century, and this extension now forms Ebford Manor Cottage, which is connected to the rear wing of Ebford Manor.

There is a 20th-century extension at the left-hand end, which is slightly recessed. The hall is heated by a rear lateral stack that was formerly external, while the inner room is unheated. The service end is heated by a former end stack that is now axial. The cottage has an internal front lateral stack, which is now surrounded by an extension with a catslide roof. All stacks feature brick shafts.

The building is two storeys high and has an irregular front with a seven-window range. The upper floor windows include early 19th-century horizontal sliding sashes (one with two lights and two with three lights) and one 19th-century three-light casement, along with some 20th-century windows. The ground floor has four casement windows. At the rear, the stack features crow-stepped offsets, and there are 19th and 20th-century casement windows.

Inside, the stairs now occupy the entrance hall, which is a 20th-century addition. There are newel stairs at the rear of the service end stack, and the hall and service end have roughly-chamfered cross beams. The cottage contains two chamfered cross beams and a fireplace with very large stone jambs. Roof trusses are partially visible in the first-floor rooms, featuring large straight principals. On the end wall of the first floor, two recently-exposed primitive paintings, possibly from the 18th century, depict a dog and a magpie and cock playing cards.
