Description
The Speller headstone, located approximately 1 metre east of the south transept of the Church of St John, is a tall headstone dated 1783 in memory of Thomas Speller and his close relatives. Made of hamstone, this upright square-headed slab stands about 2.2 metres high. The front features an inscribed frame designed as a round-headed arched aedicule, supported by fluted columns with moulded bases and capitals. The arch is decorated with an egg and dart motif and has a fluted keystone. Sunbursts are present at both top corners. The inscription is crafted in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, including italics, and it commemorates the deaths of Thomas Speller in 1783, his wife Honor in 1794, and their son Abraham in 1805.
