Description

Woodmead is a cottage dating from around 1840, with possibly an earlier core, and was refurbished around 1970. It is constructed from local stone and flint rubble, featuring some Hamstone details, and has stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick. The cottage is situated on a south-west facing slope, terraced into the hillside at the north-west end, which places it below the road. It has a two-room plan with a central staircase, comprising a parlour on the left and an original kitchen, both with gable-end stacks. The building is two storeys high and includes integral service outshots at the rear.

The exterior features a symmetrical three-window front with original casements that contain rectangular panes of leaded glass. The central doorway has a part-glazed door from around 1970, set behind a contemporary porch. The roof is gable-ended, with Hamstone shaped kneelers and coping.

Inside, the cottage has plain carpentry details. Both ground floor rooms have full width joists, with reused axial beams inserted for support. The kitchen includes a large brick fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel, while the parlour has a 19th-century grate. The owner notes evidence of blocked windows and a doorway in the left end wall, which have been obscured by the road's buildup.
