Description
YARCOMBE MARSH ST 21 SE 4/185 Woodmead - - II Cottage. Circa 1840, possibly earlier core, refurbished circa 1970. Local stone and flint rubble with some Hamstone detail; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; thatch roof. Plan: the cottage faces south-west. It is built down the hillslope and terraced into it at the left (north-west) end. Thus the cottage is set below the road. It has a 2-room plan with a central staircase. There is a parlour to left and original kitchen and both rooms have gable-end stacks. 2 storeys with integral service outshots to rear. Exterior: symmetrical 3-window front of original casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. The central doorway contains a circa 1970 part-glazed door behind a contemporary porch. The roof is gable-ended with Hamstone shaped kneelers and coping. Interior: has plain carpentry detail. Both ground floor rooms have full width joists but reused axial beams have been inserted to support them. The kitchen has a large brick fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel. The parlour fireplace has a C19 grate. According to the owner there is evidence of windows and a doorway in the left end wall which have been blocked by the build up of the road.
