Description

George Park is a house dating from the early 19th century, with a later addition to the rear wing. The building is rendered, except for the later 19th-century addition which is made of stone rubble. It has a slate roof that is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right end, with a stack at the junction between the main range and the rear right wing, and an end stack to the wing.

The plan consists of a single-depth main range that faces southwest and fronts onto the road. It is two rooms wide with a central entrance. The rear right wing, which is likely a service wing, creates an overall L-shaped plan. This wing has been extended by a lean-to on the inner return, probably added in the late 19th century.

The exterior features two storeys and a symmetrical three-bay front that retains its original features. There are steps leading up to an early 19th-century panelled front door with a glazed overlight that has diamond glazing bars. The house has a charming early 19th-century porch with a lead roof, supported by slender cast iron columns and wrought iron spandrels that form round-headed arches at the front and each return. The original sash windows include three over six panes on the first floor and six over nine panes on the ground floor. The right return, which is the garden front, has early 19th-century first-floor sashes with three over six panes and two ground-floor bay windows from the 19th century, featuring lead roofs over patterned glazing bars above the transomed windows.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain original features. The exterior remains largely unspoiled from the early 19th century. The building has group value with Redwoods and Thistle Cottage located on the opposite side of the road.
