Description

The Cottages is a house, formerly two cottages that were once part of a farmhouse. It likely has a core dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, but it was largely rebuilt in the 19th century when it was converted into cottages and underwent thorough refurbishment around 1980. The building is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with one cob stack and another made of 20th-century brick, topped by a thatch roof.

The cottage has a three-room plan and faces southeast. The interior has been so extensively refurbished around 1980 that the earlier layout is difficult to determine. It was probably once open to the roof and may have been a longer building. The left room features a cob projecting end stack, and there is a cob crosswall between the left and center rooms. A 20th-century axial stack is located between the center and right rooms.

The building is two storeys high with an irregular two-window front. This includes a thatch-roofed canted bay window from 1986 with casements that have glazing bars to the left, and a contemporary casement with glazing bars in the middle room. Above this, there is an earlier 20th-century casement with glazing bars that rises into the thatch. The roof is gable-ended on the left and half-hipped on the right. The right end features a two-window front of 20th-century casements with glazing bars and includes a contemporary glazed door.

The interior primarily showcases features from around 1980, but the roof remains original, consisting of a three-bay structure supported by two face-pegged jointed cruck trusses. The roof space is inaccessible.
