Description

EAST BUDLEIGH DALDITCH LANE, Knowle SY 08 SW 5/60 Nos. I and 2 The Cottages - GV II House, formerly 2 cottages, once a farmhouse. Probably late C15-early C16 core, much rebuilt in C19 when converted to cottages and thoroughly refurbished circa 1980. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; one cob stack, the other C20 brick; thatch roof. 3-room plan cottage facing south-east. Interior so thoroughly refurbished circa 1980 that earlier layout very difficult to establish. At one time it was probably open to the roof and may then have been a longer building. Left room has cob projecting end stack and crosswall between left and centre room is also cob. C20 axial stack between centre and right rooms. 2 storeys. Irregular 2-window front comprising a thatch-roofed canted bay window to 1986 containing casements with glazing bars to left and a contemporary casement with glazing bars to the middle room. Above this an earlier C20 casement with glazing bars rises into the thatch. Roof is gable-ended to left and half-hipped to right. The right end has a 2-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars and includes a contemporary glazed door. Interior shows mostly circa 1980 features. The roof however is original. A 3-bay roof carried on 2 face-pegged jointed cruck trusses. Roofspace inaccessible.
