Description

Axe Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 16th century, originally featuring an open hall that has since been modified with an inserted floor. The building is constructed from plastered stone rubble and has a thatched roof with half hipped and gabled ends, along with eyebrow eaves. It stands two storeys high and has a long range of four or five windows. The facade includes three four-light windows with ovolo moulded wood mullions and later casements. There is an off-centre doorway leading to a cross passage, framed with heavy moulded wood and featuring a Tudor arch. An external rendered brick ridge stack is also positioned off centre. At the north end, there is a four-light wooden window with chamfered edges. The rear of the house has an external stack and a projection stair bay.

Inside, the farmhouse features jointed cruck trusses and a cross passage with a plank and muntin screen. There is a section of a similar screen with a Tudor arch doorway next to the chimney stack, which backs onto the cross passage. A higher-level plank and muntin screen also has a Tudor arch doorway. At the rear, there are two solid wood newel stairs. The first floor includes a partition with a round arch doorway and another Tudor arch doorway at the top of the stairs at the lower end. The ceilings have stopped chamfered beams.
