Description

The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design dating from the 1930s, constructed of cast iron and painted red with horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are situated on the top panels, not perforated. Rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" are positioned beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment, and the kiosk is in good condition.

Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee, the K6 was a refinement of his earlier K2 design. It was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 were manufactured, with many replaced in the 1960s.

The kiosk is situated on a small base at the side of the High Street in Honiton, directly in front of 128 High Street (Grade II) and 10m west of 130 High Street (Grade II). Across the road, approximately 15m north, stand 145 High Street (Grade II) and Manor House (Grade II*), forming a group of listed buildings. The K6’s designation at Grade II reflects its strong visual relationship with these buildings and its representative status as a significant 20th-century industrial design.
