Description
The Warren headstone, located approximately 6 metres south-east of the chancel of the Church of St John, is a Grade II listed memorial dated 1756 in memory of Mary Warren. Made of hamstone, this upright slab stands about 1.4 metres high. Its shaped head features a carving of an hourglass flanked by winged cherub heads and scrolls. The panel below is framed with carved scrolled foliage and rosettes. The inscription is divided into two columns by a carved tasselled cord, with the first word of each column in Gothic lettering, while the remainder is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The inscription is very faint and much of it is difficult to read except in ideal lighting conditions. It is likely a memorial for a husband and wife, with the left column recording the death of Mary Warren in 1756.
