Description
This barn, located approximately 8 metres northwest of Great Auncke Manor, dates from the late 17th century and was reroofed in the 19th century. It is constructed from local hand-made red brick, featuring some burnt headers, and is laid in a random bond that tends to resemble Flemish bond. The roof is covered with red tiles, having originally been thatched. The barn is designed as a double structure aligned on a north-south axis, with two sets of opposing full-height doorways leading to the threshing floors. The east side doorways are flanked by short projecting midstrey walls. The doors include some very old flaps. The roof is gable-ended, although it appears that the south end was originally half-hipped. A window at the north end was once a hayloft loading hatch. Inside, the barn is open to the roof, supported by a series of 19th-century replacement A-frame trusses. This barn is contemporary with the main house and represents an early example of brick construction in rural Devon.
