Description
Riverside Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the late 17th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with a cob or stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick. The roof is thatched, with corrugated asbestos used for the outshots. The cottage has a two-room plan and faces south, featuring a central lobby entrance in front of a central axial stack that serves back-to-back fireplaces. There is a 20th-century service outshot on the left (western) end, which has its own stack that backs onto the end wall of the house. The main cottage is two storeys high and has a slightly asymmetrical two-window front with 19th-century and 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The central door is from the 20th century and is accompanied by a contemporary open porch with a hipped thatch roof. The main roof is hipped at both ends. The interior was not available for inspection at the time of the survey. There is a documentary reference to the cottage from 1686.
