Description

The Shieling is a small cottage that may have originally served as an agricultural outbuilding. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and was reorganised and modernised in the late 19th century. The exterior is plastered, with brick on the first floor and cob-nogged framing at first floor level, along with brick stacks and a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room plan, facing north, and is built onto the right (western) end of an early 16th-century house that has since been subdivided and is now occupied by The Old Bakery and Ham Cottage. The original rooms were served by end stacks, with the right stack projecting. The rooms have since been combined into one. There is a late 19th-century rear block that projects at right angles. The building is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical two-window front with 19th and 20th-century casements that have glazing bars. The roughly central front doorway now contains a 20th-century glazed door and a contemporary hipped and thatched hood. The roof is hipped to the right and continues with Ham Cottage on the left. Inside, the carpentry detail is plain, with the oldest joinery dating from the late 19th century, including the stairs. The roof of the main block was replaced around 1970.
