Description
Newton Poppleford Bridge is a road bridge over the River Otter, built around 1840. It is constructed from large blocks of grey veined limestone that feature lightly-tooled rustication, with granite coping. The bridge has three spans supported by low segmental arches that rise above a plain projecting impost on vertical abutments. The vaults are plain and feature large, carefully shaped voussoirs. The projecting cutwaters have rounded ends and extend to the impost level, topped with low semi-conical granite coping. Just above the cutwaters, the wall slightly protrudes forward. A drip course runs at road level, which ramps slightly towards the center. The parapet has coping that slopes very slightly outward and curves outward at each end, with terminal piers that project only externally.
