Description

The Cottage, at Northmostown Court, is a cottage likely dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, although it was modernised in 1986. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The building is L-shaped. The main south-facing block comprises a larger western room, featuring a rear lateral stack, and a smaller right room with an end stack, possibly an insertion. A service room is located in a lower, rear block set at a right angle behind the eastern end.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an irregular two-window front with 1986 casement windows without glazing bars; the first-floor windows have flat thatched eyebrows. A part-glazed door, also dating from the 1986 modernisation, is located near the left end of the front. All other windows are contemporary. The main roof is half-hipped at each end, and the rear block roof also has a half-hipped end.

The interior largely reflects the 1986 modernisation, which appears to be superficial, as the original layout remains. The main front room and the rear service room feature late 17th to early 18th century crossbeams with neat, chamfered under-edges without stops. The fireplace in the main room is likely original, and while plastered, the oak lintel has a chamfered under-edge. The roof is constructed with A-frame trusses; the roofspace, which was not inspected, is reported to contain pegged lap-jointed collars.
