Description
Clements Meadow is a house dated 1902, possibly designed by C E Ponting, who was an architect and surveyor for Marlborough College. The construction is Flemish bond diapered red and blue brick with tumbled brick gables and stone dressings, topped with a slate roof in three spans. Brick axial stacks feature, each with four engaged octagonal shafts. The plan is of three short, parallel ranges situated side-by-side. The north front has an entrance in the centre, with a lower, one-storey and attic range on the east side and a short axial range at a right angle on the west side. The architectural style is vernacular revival.
The north front has three gables with long bands of stone mullion windows on the ground and first floors. The first floor incorporates three large carved stone coats of arms, while the ground floor has a small integral stone porch with carved arms in its pediment, and a canted bay to the left, in the angle with a projecting single-storey and attic service range. This service range features a small, keyed bullseye in its gable end. A small enclosed service yard is situated on the east side. The south garden front presents three symmetrical gables, each with large three, four, and five-light stone mullion transom windows, and a large stone canted bay window at the centre of the ground floor. The short axial range is set back on the left (west) side, with a porch in the angle. The gable end of the lower service range is set back on the right (east) side, featuring a four-light stone mullion window, a bullseye in the gable, and a small single-storey range to the right with a stack. All windows are leaded pane casement windows, and ornate rainwater heads are present. The interior has not been inspected. The house was built for Marlborough College house masters. C E Ponting, the architect, also designed Marlborough Town Hall and Marlborough College Gymnasium.
