Description

Hyde Cross is a house dated 1902, possibly designed by architect and surveyor C E Ponting for Marlborough College. It was extended in the late 20th century. The building features Flemish bond diapered red and blue brick with tumbling in the gables and stone dressings, topped by a three-span slate gabled roof and brick stacks with engaged octagonal shafts.

The plan consists of three short parallel ranges side-by-side, with the left (east) range being longer and projecting at the north front, where the main entrance porch is located at the right angle, with service areas to the left and a late 20th-century conservatory beyond. The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical north front with three gables. The right gable has a large projecting stack with tile weathered set-offs and a pair of octagonal shafts, while the left gable features stone mullion windows and central canted bays, with its roof extending down on both sides over a stone arcaded porch on the right and over service rooms on the left, which includes a three-centre arch doorway. There are flat-roof dormers on both sides of the left-hand range.

The south garden front displays three symmetrical gables, with the central gable featuring a projecting stack adorned with a large stone coat-of-arms, flanked by small windows on the first floor. A doorway on the left has a stone mullioned fanlight, and there is a two-light mullion window on the right. The left and right gables each have large canted single-storey bay windows with stone mullion-transom windows, and four-light stone mullion-transom windows above on the first floor. An outshut on the right (east) is connected to the adjoining late 20th-century single-storey conservatory. All windows are leaded pane casements, and the building has ornate rainwater heads.

The interior has not been inspected. Hyde Cross was built for the house masters of Marlborough College. Architect C E Ponting is also known for designing Marlborough Town Hall and Marlborough College Gymnasium.
