Description
This is a row of four cottages located on the west side of Ham Green. They were largely rebuilt in the late 19th century, though they may incorporate elements of an earlier structure, possibly dating back to the 17th century. The cottages are built of coursed rubble stone and have pantiled roofs topped with brick stacks.
The cottages are single-storey with an attic, and have a four-window facade. A gabled porch with an entrance is located on the left return of No. 56. The windows are mostly 2-light casements, fitted in the 19th century, on both the ground and first floors. There is evidence of an earlier roofline. The front of the cottages has three 20th-century doors, one blind doorway, and four margin-pane plate glass sashes, all set within raised architraves with ogee-shaped tops. Three raking dormers, each with a 2-light casement and margin-pane glazing, project from the roof; the dormer on the right-hand side has margin-pane glazing. The cottages are listed primarily to recognise their group value and their significant position on the edge of Ham Green.
