Description
These are a pair of smallholders’ dwellings, built around 1920 as an experiment for the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries. They are constructed of cavity brickwork with a Roman tile roof. Each cottage is single-storey with an attic, and comprises two bays. The roof of the outer bay extends over the front section, which contains the entrance. A panelled door and timber-framed windows with multiple panes are present; the windows have brick soldier courses above, except for the 5-light bedroom window, which has a relieving arch. Openly raftered eaves and three brick stacks are also visible. Number 31 has had its windows and door replaced in the late 20th century and a small dormer window added, but it is still considered part of the original group. The dwellings were illustrated in Country Life magazine in November 1920.
