Description
A pair of experimental smallholders' dwellings dating from approximately 1920 to 1922, built for the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries. The houses are constructed with cavity brickwork, a slate damp course, and tiled roofs. They are two storeys high, with each cottage comprising two bays. The roofs extend down over single-storey kitchens built into the gable ends. The cottages feature panelled front doors above six upper panes of glazing, and timber-framed windows with soldier course arches and tile drip courses. Chamfered brick sills are bedded on tile. The roofs are sprocketed, with large five-flue brick stacks on the hip end of the roof and a four-flue stack on the party wall. The entrance to No 41 has been altered to a glazed door, while the entrance to No 39 is enclosed within a glazed porch. The design uses local materials and reflects traditional construction techniques, following earlier experimental dwellings. These features were documented in Country Life magazine in November 1920.
