Description

Dray Cottage is a gamekeeper's cottage from the Draycot estate, built in 1858. It is constructed of squared rubble stone and features a deep-eaved roof made of Bridgwater tiles, along with two rebuilt ridge stacks. The cottage has one and a half storeys and a symmetrical front with two gables and a recessed centre, which is also gabled. The gables are adorned with ornate Gothic barge boards that extend to the side eaves.

The architectural style is picturesque Gothic, characterized by 2-light pointed windows that are cusped with quatrefoil heads and have hoodmoulds. Each main gable has one upper window and two lower windows on either side of the door, which is framed in rough tufa. The right gable displays a date plaque from 1858 at its apex, while its upper window is blank and the door is blocked. The left gable features an armorial plaque at the apex, a single light window on the first floor, and an altered ground floor with 20th-century windows. The recessed centre has a 2-light window on the first floor and a 20th-century window on the ground floor.

There is a three-bay tiled verandah supported by timber posts, which is set to be replaced in 1986. The rear left gable has similar barge boards, a pair of casement windows, and a pointed doorway with the original door. The rear centre has one horizontal sliding sash window, and the right side includes a 1986 extension. Inside, the south end room features a fine early to mid-18th century stone fireplace and shelf. Dray Cottage was illustrated in the 'Draycot House Estate' sale catalogue on July 28, 1922.
