Description

Clematis Cottage is a pair of houses, now combined into a single property, dating to the 18th century with an earlier 17th-century timber-frame structure at the left-hand side. The front of the building was refaced in the 18th century, using chequered brick with a slate roof that is half-hipped to the west and early 19th century to the right, clad in red brick with slate. A stack is located between the two sections, and a further stack is present at the rear of the earlier range. The cottage is two storeys high. The earlier range features an ashlar string course and raised brick eaves, with three-light flush cyma-moulded stone mullion windows on each floor. The west-facing wall of this range is exposed timber framing, exhibiting a tie-beam-and-collar truss design. The later section has a double-fronted appearance with 16-pane sash windows and a central front door, all set within flush ashlar surrounds. A hood is supported by brackets above the door, and there are flush quoins at the right corner. The brickwork is laid in an English garden wall bond pattern.
