Description
This is a small, late 17th or early 18th century cottage with a gable end facing the street. It is built of coursed rubble with some ashlar blocks, and has a stone slab roof. The gable features a saddle stone and a raised panel in the apex, along with a blocked-up round-headed opening. The first floor has three grouped windows, which were originally sash windows, though their glazing bars are now missing. A 18th century bowed shop window is on the ground floor to the left, featuring small colonnettes at the angles. To the right is a doorway with a moulded wooden surround, leading to a three-panel door with the upper two panels glazed.
Attached to the north side of the cottage is a wall constructed of large ashlar blocks with a plinth. This wall runs up the hill, turning away from the road to connect with a tall gatepier, approximately 12 feet high, topped with a plain stone.
This cottage, along with other buildings in Whitehead’s Lane, numbers 15 to 17 Silver Street and numbers 1 to 4 and 7 and 8 White Hill, are considered to form a group of buildings of group value.
