Description

Ashton House is a house located on the west side of High Road in Ashton Keynes, dating from the mid to late 18th century and into the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a stone slate roof and features two storeys plus attics. The main façade has five window bays, with a two-bay return on the north side and an additional block overlooking the river. The ground floor has 6-pane sash windows with a continuous drip mould and keyed surrounds. The first floor features twelve-pane sashes, with the central window having a round head and keyed surround. A moulded parapet tops the building, and there are two hipped dormers with leaded casements and knob finials. Gable stacks are present, and the end return has blind windows along with a canted oriel window that overlooks the river. The block beyond the return includes a five-light mullioned and transomed window with leaded casements and timber lintels on the first floor, and a right gable stack.

At the rear of the main block, there is a parallel block from the early to mid-19th century featuring twelve-pane sashes, and to the left end, a cross wing that is two storeys high with a single-storey link across the end of the main block, forming an entrance. This section has stone mullioned and transomed windows with label mouldings. In front of the building, there is a limestone ashlar river wall along the Thames, which includes a skewed arch bridge on axis and a riverside terrace in front of the north block, creating a picturesque group.
