Description
No. 40 Horsefair is a pair of houses that have been converted into a single shop. They date from the mid-18th century and are constructed of coursed limestone, which was formerly limewashed. The building features a stone ridge stack and a stone slate roof. Each house originally had a single-room layout and is now a single-storey building with an attic, presenting a one-window range.
The south gable includes timber lintels above a left-hand doorway with a 20th-century door, a 20th-century shop front, and a central attic casement. On the right side, there are timber lintels above a blocked doorway located left of center, a right-hand window, and a central gabled dormer. There is also a left-hand extension.
Inside, the ground floor has been altered, but notable features include a winder stair next to the central fireplace, which has a bressumer in the first-floor front room, and chamfered ceiling beams.
