Description

The Church of St. Christopher is an Anglican parish church, originally dating from circa 1100. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century, the south porch in the 14th century, and alterations were made in the 15th century. It was restored in 1860 by E.W. Godwin. The church is constructed of rubble stone with stone tiled roofs, incorporating coped gables, cross finials at the east and west ends, and a rebuilt gabled bellcote at the east end of the nave.

The church consists of a nave, chancel, and a 20th-century north vestry addition, along with a south porch. The nave, dating from circa 1100, features a 15th-century two-light west window with a flat head and hoodmould. A single 15th-century north window is located east of the vestry. The south side has a pair of 19th-century small cusped pointed lights, and the east end has buttresses. The south porch is of the 14th century, with its roof raised in the 19th century to accommodate the door surround. It has a two-chamfered arch with a hoodmould and two side buttresses, with stone seats inside and two original arch-braced collar rafter trusses. A fine south doorway from circa 1100 has carved animal imposts and carved head corbels supporting an arched tympanum with a frieze of ten lyre or acanthus-type motifs. The doorway is framed by 19th-century unmoulded columns, imposts, and an arch, with a studded plank door.

The chancel has two 15th-century flat-head windows with hoodmoulds on the south side, flanking a low 14th-century priest's door with a hoodmould. The east window is a pair of 19th-century lancets with a column shaft and plate tracery cinquefoil above, set within a pointed stepped hoodmould.

Inside, the church has arched-braced collar rafter roofs. The south wall of the nave is lined in ashlar. A pointed segmental arched north doorway leads into the nave, and a north side rood stair is present. Two low 14th-century Decorated recesses are incorporated into the south wall. The circa 1100 chancel opening has an arch raised in the 13th century, featuring a two-chamfered pointed arch on half-octagonal corbels. The chancel has 19th-century ashlar lining to the north and east walls, along with a 13th-century south wall piscina featuring a rose motif around the drain. A circular Norman font with roll motif decoration is also present. A high Victorian stone pulpit, banded in two colours with incised decoration, is situated within the church. Stained glass from circa 1860 is found in the chancel, with the east window by Bell of Bristol (now faded), and two south windows. Circa 1860 windows, also faded, are in the nave north and south, and the west window dates from circa 1864. Numerous reset plaques from the 17th and 18th centuries are displayed, with two on the north wall, dated circa 1700 and 1748, within carved frames.
