Description
The Old Deanery, also known as the College of Sarum St Michael, dates back to 1594 and is located within The Close. Originally established in 1277 by Bishop Roger de Wykehampton, the building served as the Deanery. It underwent significant alterations and was recased mainly in the 18th century, with restoration of the hall occurring in 1963.
The east front features a restored medieval hall constructed of flint and stone rubble, showcasing three gabled pointed traceried windows. The gables rise above the eaves, with a smaller gable above the pointed doorway, supported by three stone buttresses. To the left, there is a two-storey projection made of flint and stone rubble, topped with a hipped tiled roof. This section includes two large early 19th-century sash windows on the first floor and a modern glazed door on the ground floor. The north side of this projection has a cusped headed stone-framed one and two-light windows. To the right, there are irregular extensions of flint and rubble, featuring a projecting gable and a half-hipped gable, with sash windows and a restored pointed window.
The south front has two external stone chimneys with offsets and flint and stone walling, including some tile herringbone corner buttresses. It also features three-light cusped headed windows. The west front mirrors the hall's design with three gabled windows, restored similarly to the east front. To the right, there is a tall two-storey projection incorporating some reused old stonework and flint rubble, highlighted by a very large segment-headed early 19th-century style window and a canted bay window supported by two Tuscan columns, with French windows below. The north side of this projection has two original windows and a pointed door. To the left, there is a hipped roof section with two windows and a one-storey and attic flint rubble extension to the north. The north front displays the gable ends of two northern ranges with a recessed centre, showing traces of timber framing in the gables.
Inside, the hall comprises a solar at the south end and butteries at the north end, featuring a trussed rafter roof from the 13th century, which is notable for having the only 13th-century louvre framing in the country. All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
