Description

Arundells is a Grade II* listed building located in The Close, originally a canonical house that was largely rebuilt in the late 17th century by Sir Richard Mompesson. A rainwater head dated 1699 can be found on the property. The house is set well back from the West Walk and features an east front with two storeys and an attic. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with a first-floor string course and a plinth. The hipped roof is covered in old tiles and has a moulded and bracketed wooden cornice. There are two hipped dormers with small sash windows, and the fenestration is symmetrical, featuring five windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor, all of which are sashes with restored glazing bars in moulded frames. The central door consists of six fielded panels and is framed by a stone architrave surround topped with a moulded stone pediment on console brackets. The south front mirrors this design with a similar four-bay layout.

The west front reveals part of the earlier structure, showcasing a gabled section with flintwork and a hipped roof on the wing. There is a 14th-century cusped headed two-light window on the first floor. Inside, the drawing room boasts full-height 18th-century panelling, while the early 18th-century staircase features a closed string, turned balusters, and square-section panelled capped newels. The service stair includes reset 17th-century panelling as dado. The rear hipped roof wing contains two trusses and wall posts. All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
