Description
This is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of limewashed limestone rubble with a brick party wall stack and a stone slate roof. The house has a single room depth and an attached former stable to the rear. It has two storeys and a two-window front. The right-hand side has a doorway with a 20th-century door, and a 19th-century six-pane window on the ground floor. First-floor windows are set beneath the eaves, with a mid-20th century casement window over the door and another mid-20th century two-light casement to the right. The left-hand gable returns with a curve to follow the line of the road. The rear, south-facing, gable of the former stable has cambered heads over a door on the left and a six-light ground-floor window. A timber lintel covers the first-floor casement. The interior was not inspected. It is thought that the house may be associated with the town’s former South Gate, which was located at the southern end of the High Street, and that the curved corner of the property might be linked to the gate’s position.
