Description
Nos 35 and 37 on New Canal are late 18th-century buildings that stand three storeys tall, constructed from plum-colored brick with grey headers. They feature a moulded brick string course above the first floor, a moulded stone cornice and frieze, and a brick parapet topped with stone coping. The upper floors have symmetrical fenestration with five windows; the second floor has square windows, and the recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars are topped with flat gauged brick arches.
The ground floor has been altered to a neo-Georgian shop front, which includes projecting centre windows, a frieze, and a cornice supported by Doric columned porches. The original doors remain at each end, featuring six panels and semi-circular fanlights with a radiating and wreathed leaded pattern in stucco reveals. Inside, the buildings contain two notable staircases and a mantlepiece.
Nos 35 to 39 (odd) are recognized as a group.
