Description

Five chest tombs, dating from the 18th to early 19th century, are located in the southwest corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Cyriac. The first, an early 19th-century memorial to Catherine East who died in 1819, features plain side panels, reeded angles, and a high stepped cap topped by an elongated oval urn. The second is an unidentified mid to late 18th-century memorial, heavily detailed with a projected center on the north side and a raised circular plaque bordered by egg-and-dart motifs. It has fielded panelled strips on each side, fielded end panels framed in egg-and-dart, and a moulded base and cornice that is broken forward at the center with a pulvinated frieze. The third, known as the Hancock memorial, is an early 19th-century tomb with lozenge plaques, reeded angles, a cornice with a fluted frieze, and a high stepped cap, inscribed to S. Hancock who died in 1818. The fourth is another unidentified memorial from the early to mid 18th century, featuring two shield plaques on each side, fluted angle and center piers, and a moulded base and cornice with a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over the piers. Lastly, the Brinkworth memorial, from the earlier 19th century, has moulded lyre ends, a moulded base and cornice, slab sides, and two roundels on the north side with low-relief spandrel ornament, inscribed to William Brinkworth who died in 1833.
