Description
Cool's Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse constructed of rubble stone with a cedar shingled roof, which was formerly thatched, and features brick stacks. The building is arranged in a U-shape with an entrance located in a narrow central courtyard on the west side. It has a two-storey, one-window front facing the courtyard, with a 20th-century door set in a Tudor-arched stone surround and a two-light casement window above it.
The wings on either side of the courtyard each contain four-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casements, although the left side has been blocked off along with the first-floor windows. The gable end of the north wing features a three-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casement on the ground floor and a single chamfered light in the attic. The left return of this wing has two four-light mullioned casements on the ground floor and three 20th-century casements on the first floor, while the gable end of the main range has a pointed lancet window in the attic.
On the right return of the south wing, there is a three-light mullioned casement and 20th-century French windows on the ground floor, along with two-light mullioned casements on the first floor. The rear of the main range includes a 20th-century door, three-light and four-light mullioned casements, as well as leaded casements on the first floor.
Inside, the farmhouse features deeply chamfered beams with stepped stops, and the open fireplace in the north wing has a Tudor-arched chamfered lintel resting on chamfered stone jambs. The first-floor fireplace has an elliptical-headed chamfered stone surround. The main range boasts a four-bay roof with cambered collars to the tie-beam and collar trusses, and there is a wattle and daub partition. This property was known as Upper Linley until around 1900, when it was renamed Cool's after the freeholder.
