Description
Kea Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located in the village centre of Allington. The building is timber-framed, with a brick underbuild and a thatched roof. Originally a single-storey structure with an attic, the front has been raised to create two storeys. It has three bays, with a single-storey brick extension to the left, which has a tiled roof. The main entrance is recessed and situated in the left bay of the original building. The windows are 20th-century replacements, with leaded glazing in timber frames. A small gable is above the central upper-floor window, and there are three flush dormers at the rear. The original timber framing was three panels high, with the front raised by half a panel. The roof structure comprises queen strut trusses with clasped purlins, quarter-hipped to the left. A stack is located between bays two and three. Internally, a large inglenook fireplace is present in the central bay, originally containing two ovens. Further features include a chamfered spine beam with shaped stops, exposed joists, and timber-framed partitions on the first floor. A garage has been inserted into the left bay, and the building was extensively modernised during the 20th century.
