Description

Temple House is a detached house located in Upton Scudamore, dating from the early 17th century. It features a tile-hung brick front and a tiled triple gabled roof with grouped brick stacks. The building is two stories high with an attic and has five windows. The central entrance consists of a 9-panelled studded door set within a two-storey gabled stone porch, which has a semi-circular opening with a keystone and imposts. The upper floor features a 2-light ovolo-mullioned casement with a hoodmould, and the coped verge is topped with a ball finial. On either side of the entrance, there are two plate glass sashes on both the ground and first floors.

The house has three full gabled attic dormers, each with 3-light ovolo-mullioned casements, hoodmoulds, and coped verges with ball finials. The left side of the building is rendered, and there is an attached early 19th-century rear wing that includes a 6-panelled door, a 20-pane sash, and a 16-pane sash on the ground floor, along with two 16-pane sashes on the first floor. A 19th-century slated verandah at the rear features a 2-light casement and a 9-pane sash on the first floor.

The right side of the house has blocked windows from the 17th-century range and a 2-light ovolo-mullioned casement with a hoodmould in the attic. The 19th-century rear range includes 2-light casements, 16-pane sashes, and a planked door. Inside, there is a large moulded stone Tudor-arched fireplace in the room to the left of the entrance, and 17th-century wainscot panelling in the room to the right. The rear range has 19th-century stairs. On the first floor, there are three ovolo-moulded doorcases and 2-panelled doors leading to the front, along with a bolection-moulded fireplace in the south-west bedroom.
