Description
The lodge and gatepiers at the north entrance to Cathedral School were built in 1843. This single-storey and attic lodge is made of ashlar stone and features a picturesque design with two gabled blocks, one of which is stepped out. The gables have stone copings and kneelers, and the south gable includes a projecting ledged chimney with small offsets. The roofs are steeply pitched and covered with scalloped tiles.
On the gable end with the chimney, there is a small rectangular bay with a stone roof and a two-light leaded casement window. The adjoining gable end has a two-light lattice casement window, and above it, there is a stone crown that may be an early fragment that has been reset. The entrance is located on the west side, featuring a pointed arched doorway with a stone gable above that has a date tablet.
Connecting the lodge to the gate pier is a short screen wall that runs at right angles to the lodge, which includes a door and a merlon that is canted over, likely with a reset medieval head. The tall stone gate piers have stepped caps topped with ball finials, and there is a modern wooden gate.
