Description
The summerhouse, located in the Italian garden northeast of the Manor House Hotel, dates from the mid-19th century and incorporates medieval fragments. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a rubble stone retaining wall at the rear, and it was originally roofed. The front features three sides with Perpendicular style stone arches, pierced cusped balustrading, and buttresses that support diagonally set carved pinnacles. In 1984, one section of the balustrade and two pinnacles were dismantled. The rear retaining wall, which supports the hillside, is topped with a mid-19th century Gothic finial. This garden ornament was erected by G.P. Scrope as the centerpiece of the formal garden, which was later developed into an Italian Garden by E.C. Lowndes.
