Description

The Court House at Manor House is a gazebo with a game larder underneath, built around 1690. It features fine brickwork with lime putty pointing and raised stone quoins, topped with a slate roof. The structure has a square plan, with the lower stage containing an offset door set within a stone surround, and a horizontally set stone oval window with a moulded keyed architrave. The tall upper stage includes a door to the west and windows on three other sides, although the south window has been altered. The stone moulded architraves have archivolts, carved spandrels, and lion mask keystones. The door has a bolection moulded surround. The hipped roof is adorned with stone finial brackets and a ball.

Inside, the game larder features a brick segmental vault and hanging bars. The upper level is octagonal, with arched cupboards in the corners, each having panelled doors and shaped shelves, including one with a clerk's desk, which is said to date from when the building was used as a courtroom. Access to the upper level is via a fine series of limestone steps with brick balustrades, rising in three flights from the rear of the house. The steps have stone copings with scrolled ends. Between the steps and the gazebo, there is a large lead-lined water tank made of brick with stone copings.
