Description

This is an 18th-century building on the south side of High Street, Warminster, originally listed as number 5, Melrose. It comprises a single property with flats above and to the rear, currently occupied by three shops on the ground floor. The front is two storeys high. The front façade is constructed of ashlar Bath stone, with the first floor rendered. The ground floor has been modernized with three shops, replacing a pedimented doorcase and windows previously recorded. A plain parapet is topped with moulded coping, and the roof is tiled, hipped to the left, with a single brick ridge chimney. There are six windows on the first floor; these are glazing bar sash windows, each slightly curved to match the building's plan.

At the rear of number 27, a late 18th-century staircase features a ramped rail that curls at the bottom, a dado, and a round-headed window providing light. A small cobbled courtyard lies at the rear, bounded by two-storey wings constructed of rubble. The east wing creates a picturesque alleyway with the rear extensions of numbers 5 to 17 (odd) on the same street.
