Description

The Obelisk is a Grade I listed structure located in Stourton with Gasper, built between 1839 and 1840 for Henry Hugh Hoare. It was constructed to replace an earlier obelisk from 1746. The obelisk features a tapered shaft made of Bath stone, which stands on a square base of green limestone. At the top, there is a metal sun disc. On the side facing Stourhead House, there is a memorial plaque that was originally part of the first obelisk, placed here by Colt Hoare in 1815 in memory of his grandfather, Henry Hoare. The Obelisk is positioned prominently at the end of a turfed terrace walk and aligns with the center of the west front of Stourhead House.
