Description

There are two chest tombs located in the churchyard about 2 meters southeast of the rood stair of the Church of St Peter and Paul. The first tomb is an unidentified monument from the early 19th century, constructed of ashlar, featuring plain framed side plaques and reeded centre and angle piers. The capstone has an applied oval centre plaque. The second tomb is the Shipton monument from the later 18th century, also made of ashlar. It has baluster angles, slab sides, and low relief rococo framing around the plaques. The north inscription commemorates Elizabeth Shipton, who died in 1763, while the south inscription is for Francis Shipton, who died in 1799.
