Description

Donhead Mill is a water mill and house, now used as a house and workshops, located on Tisbury Road in Donhead St. Andrew. It dates from the mid-18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of dressed limestone with tiled roofs; the mill roof is half-hipped and features gable end brick stacks. The structure is L-shaped, with the house having an integral outshut.

The house is two stories tall and has two windows, featuring casements. A 20th-century glazed door is located at the center, with 2-light 20th-century casements on either side. The first floor has 2-light casements set in moulded stone architraves, with a coped verge on the left side. The right side of the building has light timber-framing with brick nogging in the gable, which includes a large 2-light casement.

Attached to the left of the house is a two-story extension, likely from the 19th century, which has 2-light casements and a Welsh slate roof. The rear of the house features a 20th-century door and 20th-century casements on both the ground and first floors, with the first floor created by raised eaves of the outshut.

The mill, which is attached to the right of the house, has 2-light casements, a ledged door, and a 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement. The mill race runs below two segmental stone arches, partly replaced by a straight stone lintel. The right side of the mill has a 2-light casement in a weatherboarded gable, with a stone buttress below. Attached to the rear of the mill is a range of workshops that includes a garage door and casements, topped with a half-hipped tiled roof.

Inside the house, there are chamfered beams and an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on chamfered stone jambs in the outshut. The original three-bay roof features two tiers of butt purlins and collars. The mill retains part of a cast-iron water wheel marked with the name E.S. Hindley of Bourton, Dorset, from 1887, and one millstone remains in situ on the ground floor, now used as a sitting room.
