Description

The stables located to the southeast of Alkerton House were built in 1862 by an unknown architect and are currently used as a garage and storage space. This two-storey stable block has an L-shaped plan and is made of plain brick and stone, topped with a pitched asbestos slate roof installed in 1972, which replaced an earlier stone roof. A brick chimney stack is present.

The main front of the west wing features a wide opening supported by a reinforced steel joist, which replaced the former double doors, and there is a hay loft above. The south wing, extending east-west, has two double doorways with an opening above, a round-headed archway on the left that has been blocked at its south end since the late 20th century, a single doorway on the far left, and three single doorways to the right.

The east gable is made of local dressed and coarsed stone and has two openings at the first floor level. The west gable features a date stone from 1862 and is constructed of brick laid in a Flemish bond. The rear of the building to the south is made of dressed coarsed stone, while the north gable is of brick laid in a Flemish bond with dressed limestone quoins.

Inside, the stable room in the west wing has a geometrically laid cobbled stone floor, wainscotted panelling with a corner trough, and lime plastered walls. Narrow, open wood stairs lead to the hay lofts above the south and west wings. The rooms in the south wing contain stone or tile floors, fixed casement windows to the south, wainscotted panelling, and some have saddle racks. The hay lofts above feature wooden floors and mill-sawn King Post roofs.

This stable block was built for Alkerton House, with which it forms an important group.
