Description

The Derry Hill War Memorial is a stone structure built after the First World War to honor 21 local men who lost their lives while serving their country during that conflict. It also commemorates an additional 6 men who died in the Second World War. The memorial features a tall shaft set on an octagonal stepped base, which is topped with an intricately carved Gothic-style finial that depicts St George and the Dragon. Each face of the base is inscribed with the years 1914 - 1918, the phrase "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND / WE FOR ENGLAND DIED," followed by the names of the fallen, and the years 1939 - 1945, along with the words "GREAT WAR / ROLL OF HONOUR" and the names of those who served.
