Description

East Marsh Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century, and a refronting in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick on a rubble stone plinth, topped with a tiled roof that features an axial brick stack. Originally an open hall house, the building has a three-cell plan with extensions.

The farmhouse is two stories high and has five windows across its front. The central entrance features a two-panelled door with strap hinges set in a chamfered wooden surround. To the right of the door are two 2-light segmental-headed casements, while to the left are a 4-light casement and a 2-light casement. On the first floor, there are three 2-light casements, one 3-light casement, and a single-light casement, all with 20th-century leading.

The left side of the building has 2-light casements and a lean-to extension, with some rubble stone and lower rooflines indicating earlier construction. The right side has a 3-light 20th-century casement on both the ground and first floors. The rear features 20th-century French windows, casements, and a two-storey wing from the 1970s on the left, along with an 18th-century outshut with casements on the right.

Inside, the farmhouse retains timber-framing in the former rear wall, along with chamfered beams that have run-out stops. There are open fireplaces with chamfered lintels set on stone jambs in both the hall and parlour, and a partly blocked fireplace at the lower end. The stairs are located on the south side of the inserted axial stack and are enclosed with plank and muntin. The roof retains smoke-blackened trusses with cambered collars and two tiers of butt purlins, which are part of the former two-bay open hall, with a closed truss dividing the bay over the service end.
